In 4° (18.7 cm), [ ]1 A-Z4 Aa4 Bb2, cc. [1], pp. 187 [1 bianca], cc. [31 fuori testo, bianche al verso]. Antiporta fuori testo, bianca al recto, nella quale è ritratto Ptolemaeus e in calce: Claudius Ptolemy Born at Pelusium, in Egypt Ano Dom. 135. Le 31 (e non 36 come enuncia il titolo) sono dedicate ad altrettanti oroscopi di celebrità antiche e dell’epoca. Tutti gli oroscopi sono nell’antica forma quadrata. Il verso del titolo è bianco.
Non si tratta, come in origine avevo ritenuto, di una pura e semplice traduzione dal latino all’inglese dell’opera di Placido de Titi(s) Physiomathematica, sive Coelestis Philosophia stampata a Milano nel 1650. In realtà, Sibly ha sì tradotto, ma anche elaborato quell’opera. L’opera originaria e quella oggetto di questa scheda furono integrate da John Partridge e Manoah Sibly, che pubblicarono nel 1790, per lo stesso stampatore W. Justins, il Supplement descritto nella scheda n. 5907. Come ho già accennato, le carte (i.e. gli oroscopi) non sono 36, ma 31 e l’oroscopo di Cromwell, pur indicato nel titolo, non c’è. Identica situazione è quella dell’esemplare digitalizzato della California University, Davis. Poiché ho ragione di ritenere che la copia che ho esaminato sia completa, le carenze segnalate denunciano una significativa sciatteria dell’autore e dell’editore. Per la precisione, le carte fuori testo dell’esemplare che ho esaminato si trovano dopo le pagine 24, 32, 40, 44, 50, 56, 62, 68, 72, 78, 82, 86, 94, 100, 108, 112, 120 (segnata 20), 128, 132, 136, 140, 148, 154, 158, 162, 168, 172, 176, 174 (segnata 184), 180, 184. Invece nel già citato esemplare della California University le carte fuori testo sono tutte alla fine.
